My inspiration for this body of work is based on collections, mark making and the spontaneity of monoprinting.
We all collect something over time and my collections come from the natural world. Fallen nests, almost round stones, stones with white circles, green stones, stones that can be stacked, stones unique to the beach I am walking and the list goes on.
While touring ancient sites and caves in the Dordogne region in France, I was inspired by early mans collection of mark making and geometric signs scrawled on the walls of caves. Paleoanthropologist, rock art researcher, Genevieve von Petzinger has studied and codified these ancient markings in caves across Europe. Her amazing research reveals the same 32 symbols have been found in caves throughout Europe. The wonder of how this occurred has inspired this body of work.
Applying symbols, mark making, and geometric signs to the surface of my monoprints combined with the embedded photographic image I aim to communicate a story that is inspired by the imagination of visual language.
